( CHARACTER INFORMATION )
- ★ NAME: Cathairen Amell, Commander of the Grey
- ★ AGE: Twenties.
- ★ CANON POINT: Following the events of Awakening.
- ★ CANON INFORMATION: Dragon Age: Origins and Awakening games. There are several different origin choices (hence the name), with Warden Amell being a human mage. More specifically, she is an arcane warrior who is as good with a sword and shield as she is with a magical staff.
Origins: She was recruited to the Grey Wardens to escape punishment after attempting to help her friend Jowan escape the Circle of Magi, their home and prison. From there, she survived her joining and the Battle of Ostagar, and went on to recruit for the cause of ending the Blight, bringing Teyrn Loghain Mac Tir to justice, and clearing the name of the Grey Wardens.
She naturally sided with the mages at the Circle of Magi, rather than letting the Rite of Annulment be performed. In Redcliffe, she allowed Jowan to escape once more, saved the village from being wiped out by an army of undead soldiers, and with First Enchanter Irving's help, is able to save Connor, the Arl's son, from possession by a demon. She slew the high dragon and destroyed the cult perversion of the Disciples of Andraste, allowing news of the prophet's final resting place to spread through Ferelden. She helped put Bhelen Aeducan on the throne in Orzammar, destroyed the Anvil of the Void, and killed Branka for what she did to her own people. To secure the aid of the Dalish Elves, she convinced the Keeper to end his curse over the human werewolves and cured his people. She had Loghain executed for his treason.
Awakening: Now the Warden-Commander of the Grey Wardens in Ferelden, Cathairen was appointed Arlessa of Amaranthine. She was forced to balance the needs of the Arling while battling a new surge of intelligent darkspawn. Her role in the death the previous ruler of Amaranthine earned her enemies, as those who were loyal to him resented that they no longer enjoyed the favouritism Arl Howe had shown them. A conspiracy to have her killed was quelled, but it was both costly and bloody.
Once again finding herself reduced to sole Warden on the scene, she recruited others. While she had faced down an Archdemon before, and it certainly wasn't easy, the choice had been clear, fight and save everyone rather than flee and allow the Blight to spread and more people to die. It couldn't even compare to needing to decide where to protect most. Giving the order to burn the city of Amaranthine to the ground and thus cripple the darkspawn was the most difficult thing she's ever done. Vigil's Keep was well fortified thanks to her efforts, however, and her people were able to repel the darkspawn attack. In the final push against the darkspawn called The Mother, the Warden-Commander sided with her rival, The Architect, as he promised to break the cycle of Blights. Once the battle was won, and the Arling safe and on the way to recovery, that is when Commander Amell was able to be lured away from her world.
- ★ PERSONALITY: Cathairen's personality is first and foremost informed by her unique experience as a former member of the Circle of Magi. She feels a strong connection to others who are similarly blessed (or cursed depending upon their opinion) with magical ability, and generally tends to favour them when it comes to taking a side. A notable exception to this is when it comes to blood magic. Blood magic is not only often actively malicious, serving little purpose beyond hurting others, it also actively courts demons and is a swift road to a mage being possessed by one and becoming an abomination. While she'll turn a blind eye to apostates (mages who've fled the Circle) who simply wish to live a life of freedom, her generosity ends when blood magic is in play.
Her time as a Grey Warden, and later the Commander of the order has changed her. Where she started fairly naïve about what the world outside the Circle tower was like, she had to learn quickly how to fend for herself, and while being hunted. Curling into a ball to cry was a luxury she couldn't afford, especially when she realised that others were looking toward her for guidance and leadership. If she showed weakness, how would the others feel? Fortunately, she wasn't alone, and she never had to admit her fears in order to receive support. Cathairen makes a show of having all the answers, without appearing sanctimonious or a know-it-all, but often consults her companions to help her make informed decisions.
Those companions are precious to her. While she may not always see eye to eye with all of them, they each have value and bring perspective to her. There is very little Cathairen wouldn't do for them, and they're the ones who have the best shot at seeing the real her. The Warden-Commander seen by the public is hardened by battle and strife, who has nerves of steel and only backs down if it's in the best interests of those who need to be protected. To those who share her camp, she's fun-loving and quick to make a joke to lighten their mood. Sometimes they're even allowed to realise that she's hiding her pain behind a snarky comment - usually at her own expense.
- ★ COURT ALLIANCE: Seelie. Commander Amell has readily made sacrifices for the greater good, which I believe makes her a perfect candidate for the Seelie Court.
- ★ ABILITIES: Cathairen Amell is a Mage, and more specifically an Arcane Warrior.
- ★ INVENTORY: Vigilance (longsword), a set of robes, Spellfury (magic staff), a pair of rings, belt, amulet, and shield.

- ★ NETWORK SAMPLE:
Well. I feel like I should have expected this. Somehow, I didn't. This little contraption, though. Now this is some interesting magic. I've never seen anything like this!
[A short beat, like she's suddenly remember what she was here for.]
I am Warden-Commander Amell, and I'm looking for my fellows. If there's anyone out there, please, I'd like to know. If anybody can offer further insight on this war I don't recall signing up to fight, I'd like to hear it.
- ★ LOG SAMPLE:
It's the screaming in her mind that makes her sit bolt upright, feeling cold and gasping for air, fingers resting at her throat as if to pry at an invisible force restricting her airway. There's nothing, and there never is, but it takes a few moments to realise that she's safe. She isn't trapped underground with a horde of darkspawn pressing around her and an archdemon about to breathe fire on her. She's glad she's at the keep, and not camped out in the countryside where her sudden start might alert others. A quick breath of air sees candles dotted about the room lighting up as she swings her legs over the side of the bed, placing bare feet on chilly stone. If this were the morning, it would be unpleasant. But after that nightmare, it just feels real, and that's what she needs right now.
It's this moment that she realises how keenly she misses Alistair. He understood the nightmares, and never judged her for being rattled, even though she was supposed to be the leader. He was also able to help her differentiate between her nightmares, and actual visions of darkspawn. With the death of the Old God, it should be the former, but it isn't as if she's been a Warden during peace time.
The robe she pulls on is made of fine silk, a gift from a merchant she rescued from bandits along the road. It's possibly the nicest piece of clothing she's ever owned in her life. It feels undeserved right now, because she feels cowardly. Cowards don't earn rewards. Waking up in the night too petrified to even scream is an incredible disappointment to her, and she suspects it would be a disappointment to her soldiers.
Right now, she doesn't want to be responsible for them, or the Arling. Commander of the Grey. Arlessa of Amaranthine. No, Amell just wants to be anywhere else. Anywhere but here. She closes her eyes, and she makes a silent wish, then allows herself to smirk at her own expense and heads out to the kitchens.
